[LB is so focused on trying to strengthen her lead, that when she suddenly senses something incoming below, her instinct is to jump forward a little to avoid whatever it was. However, in the process it shifts her balance to the front a little more than she'd like, so she has to stop for a second to realign herself.]
Fuck...! [Though she manages not to fall onto the ground, LB still comes really close to it as she has to adjust her steps to keep herself on her feet. It's probably around the time when Hijikata catches up to her that she realizes it was likely the sword she watched him sheathe earlier. At the very least, she'll attempt to grab onto the sheathe to try to use it to trip him before he gets too far away - but the idea forms a little late, so she might not quite get the effect she's after.]
[He was so sure he'd make her fall down, but she has a really good balance. He doesn't even try to keep running after he overtakes her, he just immediately turns around to face her - and just as he wants to put the sword back on his belt and tackle her she grabs it. He freezes, catching his breath for a moment with them both holding on to the sheathed weapon between them.]
Good job. I hope in a serious situation you'd have been armed to block my attack.
[For a moment he considers seeing where this will go, but even though the sheath is fastened to the sword's handle - closer to his hand than to hers -he doesn't want to risk her making a maneuver that might get her hurt. She's not used to handling swords after all. So he relaxes his stance and laughs a little.]
You were right, you're not an easy challenge!
[Even now she might still have knocked him off his feet, blinded him with sand, or otherwise gotten the upper hand. In a serious situation the chase - or the battle, depending - would have been anything but decided.]
[She's probably just as surprised she didn't completely stumble - her sense of balance actually wasn't that great and LB more or less lucked out that time. She keeps her grip tight on the sheathe, pulling in a little even though he would be correct in his assessment in that she really didn't have the faintest clue on how to properly wield a sword, but she wasn't about to let him keep more things that would be easily accessible to him to trip her over again.
After his first comment, she stares back with more intensity than she intends to. LB manages to smile a little, though it doesn't quite meet her eyes.]
I really hope you'll never see the situation in which I take it seriously.
[It's not a threat, but a genuine concern from her side, even if she does her best to mask that much. But if she were to take this seriously, she'd definitely be with her tentacles. And she didn't trust herself not to kill someone else while in that suit.
Suddenly, though, she completely lets go of the sheathe, taking the opportunity to try to book it ahead in hopes that the momentum would throw him off a little. In her attempt, her expression is again more playful.]
You should have gone ahead, while you still had the chance!
[But hey, now she's getting a little more cocky, either way, and her senses might not be as sharp for the next attempt he makes.]
[The look in her eyes before she lets go of the sword gives him pause... those aren't the eyes of a capable civilian who's trying her best to defend herself, but those of a professional. A professional what, he isn't sure. Her exact profession likely just doesn't exist in his word, but if he had to describe it in one phrase he'd say she looks ready to kill. It really surprises him, despite knowing about her missions from their previous conversations. He takes her warning accordingly seriously. He doesn't feel wary of her, but he feels like he sees her in a new light. As she lets go of his weapon he wants to secure it back in place, assuming they're taking a break, but she immediately bolts.]
Oh, hey--!
[Her teasing remark puts a slight grin back on his face. He goes through with fastening the belt around his sword, knowing it would otherwise mess with his balance while he runs, then follows her again. His body is heated up from the exertion, but he's far from exhausted, and her teasing remarks fuel his eagerness to catch her.]
[She glances around, while ahead, trying to find something - anything - she can use to try to toss back at him. But they're on the more empty part of the beach, there wasn't a whole hell of a lot she could use. The thought passes to just strip herself of her shirt and use that, but then she'd have to slow down to actually take it off and that'd defeat the purpose entirely.
The one thing she does see is plenty of sand, so why not use that? Bending down, she has to lower her speed just a bit as she tosses a handful of sand behind her.]
[He was braced for that, running a little to the side of her again, and shields his eyes with his arm. Some sand still gets blown into his face, but since he had his mouth tightly shut it doesn't impede him much. He gains a bit of ground since she had to slow down, but by now the direction of the wind has changed by a few degrees, and his previous slight advantage is gone. He doesn't fall behind further, but he has trouble closing the remaining distance between them.]
...
[To motivate himself he allows himself to let his imagination run rampant for a moment. The wind carries over her scent, and he remembers the warm spring night of their last meeting and the brief kiss they shared as they bade each other goodnight. What if he had listened to his body instead of his mind then? It's quite the motivating thought right now.]
[Even if her nanos did give her a lot more stamina than she normally might have, LB does start to feel the fatigue still start to set in. Yet, there's still some competitiveness left in her to try to still do her best to win. Even if there was some small regret, in the back of her mind, in that she had spent so much time ahead that she hardly had any time to glance over Hijikata's form instead. But then, LB supposed she didn't really mind the idea of him watching her instead.
Truth be told, she couldn't immediately think of anything else she could use to hinder his progress forward that would also set her back. Still, he's close enough that she can at least playfully taunt him a bit.]
You're so close, haha! [There's some exertion in her tone as she shouts back a little.] But you still can't quite catch me!
[Her taunt works wonders once again. He pushes himself harder, like a cheetah making a final sprint to either catch or lose its prey (well, maybe if he were a Cordis that would be a more appropriate comparison). Once he's close enough he steers towards her at a sharp angle, not quite trying to slam into her like before but rather forcing her to change directions hard and fast if she wants to avoid a collision. He won't let her side-step him this time.]
[He's getting closer yet... in fact, LB finally notices that he's getting too close to the point that she was dangerously close to crashing into him! He was a little bigger than her, so he'd definitely have the advantage if they did collide. So, she needed to avoid that, if possible. However, because she realizes too late and because she was wearing down anyway, she can only make a bit of a startled cry before toppling over on her side on the sand. Bracing herself, she manages to push herself up a little, but still doesn't quite stand up.]
I guess you did, heheh! [She reaches over to one of his legs to try to pull her down with him. Granted, she was a little fatigued, so it wasn't with much effort at all.] But you're still not going to get much further!
[He sure enough loses his footing as she pulls his leg, and barely manages to catch his fall - not that the sand would have done much harm. He laughs as he sits down in a more orderly fashion to catch his breath. This time they both really need a break, he reckons.]
Good show!
[They're so well-matched, he realises, in terms of speed, endurance and reactivity... he smiles at her.]
You know, I think this was a really good idea. I don't feel angry at all anymore.
[Once Hijikata joins her, on the sand, LB shifts her position so that he can sit beside her. In all seriousness, she very likely wouldn't have been able to stay ahead most of the time, if it weren't for her nanomachines, so the fact that Hijikata was pretty much behind her the entire time said a lot about about his skills - she highly doubted that he too had nanos coursing through his system. That, in itself was far more impressive to her than her own augmented abilities.]
You're aware that you were pretty great yourself, right?
[A content sigh follows as she reaches her hand out a little to place on top of his own.]
But you're right - this is better than staying at home feeling antsy or anything worse than that. I'm glad that you're feeling better too. Maybe we can plan on doing this more, whenever we're feeling the effects of our moon?
